Experiences of conducting Medical support programmes for newly resettled villages, in Mannar district, By Chamil Prasad |

One Principle allegation made against the Sri Lanka government by the international community is that they deny access for Humanitarian Organizations to the Northern and Eastern Provinces, in particular newly resettled villages. During my attendance at the meeting of the European Parliament on Sri Lankan Human rights situation in November, this fact was highlighted with lots of misinformation. When they presented that, it reminded me of my experiences when I spent a few months in the Mannar District with newly resettled people in order to provide medical support which was conducted by the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies, an NGO that had financial support from the IOM through the Office of the Regional Director – Health, in Mannar.

H.E. Ravinath Ariyasinghe
Ambassador to European Union and Belgium
At this crucial time, Sri Lanka needs a strong presence in the international community in order to combat the various activities conducted by the pro LTTE Diaspora, these activities make the international community put negative pressure on the Sri Lankan government. The reason why I brought up this fact is because the pro LTTE Diaspora and their friends are still active and they are putting pressure on the government of Sri Lanka in order to create an unstable political environment. I have experienced this when I was at the European parliament, during the time the subcommittee on Human rights at European Parliament had organized their usual monthly meeting. I had been following these proceedings with great interest and because it was also a part of my responsibility during my stay.

While I was thinking about the Sri Lankan parliament and its democratic process towards constructive and comprehensive policy making, I went to down memory lane about my stay at European Parliament as an intern. As an intern I was fortunate enough to work with the subcommittee on defence and security of the European Parliament by supporting and assisting policy advisor of the Alliance of Liberal Democrats for Europe, (ALDE) the third largest political group of the European Parliament. Therefore, I could learn and familiarise myself with most of the democratic processes. These include: policy making and developing, separation of power within institutions, the importance of respect for democratic values and having a democratic environment to be able to make effective and comprehensive policies for the entire European Union, including the rest of the world.

Introduction
I served from from 13th September to 14th December 2010 in the European parliament with the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe, on the Internship programme conducted in coordination with the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats (CALD). I arrived in Brussels on the 11th of September and used the extra two days to prepare myself for the programme. On 13th September at 9 am I reported to the European parliament and Mr. Emmanuel Gregoire the programme coordinator of the ALDE group. He was at the information centre of the European parliament to welcome all stagiaires (interns working on various programmes) supposed to report on that. While I was registering, most of the other interns chosen for the programmes arrived and we introduced ourselves.
