Easy Reading and Comprehension PDF Print E-mail

This section includes material that was intended to promote reading for pleasure, at a time when there were few books for adult readers that used a limited vocabulary and simple constructions that would have made comprehension easy. The British Council was lucky, when the project to produce these won approval, to be able to commission Nirmali Hettiarachchi, who had just won an international short story competition organized by Deutschewelle. While her books targeted adult students, the Council also commissioned books for older students.

In addition to stories for pleasure, this section will include materials designed for students at university who needed to develop competency to read in English. A programme was initiated at Sabaragamuwa University to encourage reading in English of material relevant to particular subjects. Guiding questions and exercises were devised for material provided by subject lecturers. Usually this was simplified, but sometimes, in what are seen as standard texts, the original language was used, since reading of such texts would be required of students in the future.  Unfortunately these materials were not published, but it is hoped that they might prove useful now, for teachers and students who wish to download and use them.
